Horizon Europe 2027

Why the Hunter Must Look Outward to Scale Up

By Zara Crichton, CEO, Hunter iF

Earlier this week, Minister Tim Ayres delivered the news we’ve been waiting for: Australia is officially on track to join the massive Horizon Europe research program in 2027.

While the national headlines are rightly celebrating this as a "generational shift" for Australia’s innovation pipeline, let’s talk about what this means on the ground here in Newcastle and the broader Hunter region. To put it simply: this is the accelerator pedal for our ecosystem.

For a long time, I have championed the idea that innovation doesn't happen in a vacuum, and that the Hunter's greatest opportunity lies in becoming a formal, place-based "Super Cluster." The era of the lone-wolf innovator is over. We need radical collaboration to capture global markets and translate our raw, regional potential into globally scalable ventures. Horizon Europe is exactly the kind of massive, collaborative ecosystem that can turn our local joint ventures into international powerhouses.

Here is why this 2027 milestone is a distinct game-changer for the Hunter's core industries:

⚡ 1. Supercharging the ENERGY Transition

The Hunter is already ground zero for Australia’s clean energy transition. With our rapidly growing ecosystem of energy pioneers, we have the foundation. Horizon Europe gives our local clean-tech startups and researchers direct access to the European Union’s massive funding pools and, more importantly, to collaborative partnerships with EU nations that are aggressively pursuing decarbonisation. We won't just be innovating for Australia; we will be plugging directly into the global net-zero supply chain.

🧬 2. Elevating Health and MedTech

Through the University of Newcastle (UoN) and the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI), our region already punches well above its weight in health innovation. Horizon Europe is heavily weighted towards solving global health challenges. This agreement will allow our local medical researchers and health-tech scale-ups to seamlessly collaborate on cross-border clinical trials, data sharing, and commercialisation pathways, fast-tracking life-saving technologies from the Hunter to the world.

🛡️ 3. Scaling Defence and Advanced Manufacturing

With the Williamtown aerospace precinct and our deep industrial roots, the Hunter is a critical node in Australia’s sovereign defence and advanced manufacturing capabilities. Access to Horizon Europe means our engineering firms and defence-tech startups can integrate into allied European R&D projects. It breaks down the silos, allowing our local brilliance to scale up with the backing of international, mission-led research.

The Call to Action

2027 might sound like it’s a while away, but in the innovation lifecycle, it’s tomorrow. We cannot wait for the ink to dry before we start positioning ourselves.

The recent Ambitious Australia R&D Summary Report codified the need for "mission-led" R&D and radical reform to our innovation systems. Horizon Europe is the ultimate global arena for exactly that. My challenge to our local ecosystem, from the high-growth startups at the I2N Hub to our established heavy engineering firms, is to start looking outward right now.

  • Who are your European equivalents?

  • What global supply chain hurdles can you solve together?

  • Don't just look for an international customer; look for an international partner.

Horizon Europe gives us the bridge. Now, we need to build the joint ventures that are ready to cross it. The future of innovation isn't just "Made in Australia." If we get this right, it’s designed, scaled, and exported from the Hunter.
