A Legacy of Care and Curiosity
Lord Mayor Dr Ross Kerridge opening the 2025 Hunter Innovation Festival - 25 Sept 2025
Thanking Lord Mayor Dr. Ross Kerridge
In the world of innovation, we often talk about "firsts"… the first prototype, the first investment, the first breakthrough. For Hunter iF, one of our most cherished "firsts" occurred in 2024.
In 2024, just days after being sworn in as the 15th Lord Mayor of Newcastle, Dr. Ross Kerridge joined us to officially open the Hunter Innovation Festival. It was his first official act as Mayor, and it set a tone of collaboration and intellectual curiosity that has defined his leadership ever since. When he returned to open the festival again in 2025, it felt like a gathering of minds to make the world just that little bit better.
A Vision Beyond the Clinic
Ross’s journey from a Senior Specialist Anaesthetist at John Hunter Hospital to the Lord Mayor’s office brought a unique perspective to our region. He has always understood that innovation isn't just about gadgets or software; it’s about the "broader impact on communities to improve our lives."
His insights into health innovation, particularly his global leadership in Perioperative Medicine, reminded us that the Hunter isn't just a regional hub—it’s a global contributor. As Ross often says:
"Newcastle is a creative and innovative city, home to world-class researchers and scientists on the cutting edge of their fields. By collaborating... we can inspire the next generation of innovators."
He truly believes that communities are at their best when everyone contributes and is valued - a philosophy that mirrors the inclusive spirit we strive for at the Festival.
Connecting the Dots: Economics and Innovation
I was recently reminded of the sheer scale of the potential Ross sees in our region during a recent event where he spoke about the Hunter’s economic output. As I shared on LinkedIn, seeing the data on our region's $65 billion+ economic activity underscores why the Lord Mayor’s support is so vital. Ross has always been a champion for shifting focus toward core services and community-shaping projects that ensure this economic strength translates into a better quality of life for every Novocastrian.
A Message of Strength
As many in our community know, Ross is currently facing a significant personal challenge as he prioritises his health following his diagnosis with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma.
Ross, on behalf of the entire Hunter iF team and the innovation community, we want to wish you nothing but strength and peace as you continue this fight. You have spent your life caring for others; as a doctor, a teacher, and a leader. Now it is time for you to focus that same care on yourself and your gorgeous family. We hope you enjoy this precious time with them, away from the demands of public office.
Please know that the doors of the Hunter Innovation Festival are always open to you. You are more than a former official; you are a friend, a mentor, and a believer in the power of Newcastle’s bright future.
The Hunter iF Board and its members look forward to seeing you again soon.
With gratitude and best wishes,
Zara Crichton
CEO, Hunter iF
