Future of Manufacturing Is STRONG

A Maitland Roadshow Wrap-up

What a day! The Hunter Innovation Roadshow in Maitland last Friday was a resounding success, bringing together over 60 attendees at The Bradford Hotel for a fantastic discussion on the future of local manufacturing. The energy in the room was palpable, and it was a true testament to the innovative spirit of this community.

Maitland is a city on the rise, with a strong commitment to economic evolution. The Maitland City Council's Economic Development Strategy provides a clear roadmap for growth, focusing on key areas like people and skills, thriving places, and an innovative economy. The city's partnership with the Hunter Innovation Festival is a perfect example of this vision in action, fostering conversations that are both local and relevant.

A huge thank you to our expert speakers who shared their invaluable insights: Joshua Jeffress (Design Anthology), Paloma Siles (CSIRO), and Jacqui Daley (Hunter Manufacturing Awards). The dynamic discussion, expertly moderated by Brett Thomas (The Melt), sparked conversations about upskilling, attracting the next generation to manufacturing, and the crucial role of marketing in a changing landscape.

One of the most thought-provoking moments was a series of questions that highlighted a key challenge for the manufacturing sector: how to build the workforce of tomorrow. The conversation shifted to the vital need for manufacturers to become an employer of choice, not just to attract the next generation of talented employees, but also to invest in upskilling their existing teams. It was a powerful reminder that adapting and growing in this industry requires a proactive approach to talent development and a commitment to creating an environment where employees can thrive.

Jacqui Daley, Chair of the Hunter Manufacturing Awards, shared her perspective on why it's so valuable for manufacturers to get involved in opportunities like the HMA. She highlighted three key benefits:

  1. A mini strategy session: Taking the time to reflect on your business and its current position.

  2. Networking and collaboration: Building valuable connections with other local manufacturers to share resources and ideas.

  3. National recognition: HMA winners are now fast-tracked to finalist status for the new Industry Update Media Australian Manufacturing Awards, putting local businesses on the national stage.

The enthusiasm in Maitland made it clear that the local manufacturing community is ready to innovate and grow. The connections made and insights shared will undoubtedly lead to new opportunities and a brighter future for the region.

The conversation isn't over yet! If you missed out on the Maitland roadshow, be sure to check out the next roadshow in Singleton and get ready for the main event—the Hunter Innovation Festival, kicking off in Newcastle on September 25th.
